K'Aatsina: A Novel of RebellionMs. Harrigan has done it again! This novel, like her previous one, Acoma: A Novel of Conquest, is an engrossing read alive with wonderful characters in an exotic time and place. No one makes history come alive the way Harrigan does. I eagerly await whatever is next from this very talented writer.

La cuentista
Published in Paperback by Red Crane Books (February, 1995)
Average review score:

Wonderful! This a great book for two reasons. First, the stories are interesting and well-written. Second, if you are learning Spanish, as I am, the dual language is very helpful. Read Spanish on one side and check yourself on the other. The author has written another book or two which are very good too!

Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!As a child I grew up hearing that if I stay out to late that "La Llorona" would get me and mistake for one of ther childern and take me away forever. This book tells of the story of a young girl that thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world, and that no man in her village was good enough for her, that was until a hansome caballero rode into the village and married her. He treat good for the first months of the marrige they had childern and then he left her for a younger woman, her beauty had faded over the years as a result of this, blined by her anger she grabed all her children and throught them into the river and killed them. Once she reliazed what she had done, she ran down the river trying to get them back and triped over a rock and hit her head and died. I enjoyed this story and found it intersting that is tale is very true.

Legacy of Honor: The Life of Rafael Chacon, a Nineteenth-Century New Mexican
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (November, 1986)
Average review score:

Fascinating reading for American history buffs.Rafael Chacon (1833-1925), personally witnessed the end of the Mexican Period and was an active participant in commercial, military, and political events during the early decades of the American era from territorial status to statehood. Legacy Of Honor: The Life Of Rafael Chacon, A Nineteenth Century New Mexican is unique in its detail, anecdotal style, human interest and presents one of the few existent Hispanic points of view on the era and events surrounding the creation of New Mexico. Chacon wrote his memoirs in his seventies to record for his family the drama, adventure, and sorrow he had experienced, including his later service in the American Civil War. He fought at the Battle of Valverde, fought Indians under Kit Carson, escorted the first officials to the new established territory of Arizona, and was one of the few Hispanics to attain the rank of Major, commanding Fort Stanton at the end of the war. Chacon went on to serve several terms in the territorial legislature before homesteading near Trinidad, Colorado. Legacy Of Honor is a superbly informative, biographical contribution to academic American history collections, and fascinating reading for American history buffs.

Land of EnchantmentThis charming gift item includes interesting historical, geographic, cultural and culinary information as well as over 80 recipes for tasty items such as Guacamole, Chili Bean Dip, Tamale Pie, Flan, and Margarita Pie. The book is illustrated with petroglyphs, and gives locations and phone numbers of New Mexico museums, pueblos and reservations-vital data for tourists. A timeline profiles the area's history, and a short essay clarifies the controversial spelling and pronunciation of "chile," then gives tips for "Chile Antidotes"! The reader will be certifiably enthusiastic about N.M.
This makes for a wonderful gift!

The Life and Death of Carolina Maria De Jesus (Dialogos (Albuquerque, New Mexico).)
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (December, 1995)
Average review score:

Fascinating portrait of an African-Brazilian woman writerThis is a marvelous study not only of a poignant African-Brazilian woman persecuted for daring to state her beliefs, but one that reveals the different ways that American (Levine) and Brazilian (Meihy) scholars perceive the problems of race in society. A must read for anyone interested in Latin American society or the history of women or of blacks in the hemisphere.

Little Gold Star: A Spanish American Cinderella Story
Published in Library Binding by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (October, 2000)
Average review score:

Beautiful BookLittle Gold Star offers a wonderful blend of story and illustrations from San Souci and Martinez. Little Gold Star is a Spanish American fairy tale similar to Cinderella. However, the role of fairy godmother is filled by Blessed Mary, showing the traditional Catholic influence in this culture. San Souci is always wonderful with words, but Martinez gives the story a serene beauty with his illustrations. The book has a peaceful feeling with its subdued tones. The reader knows the story will end happily and enjoys the journey to the end all the same. I highly recommend this book.
